Assess your Real-Time Leadership Agility and Potential

Real-Time Leadership: Find the winning moves when the stakes are high.

START ASSESSMENT

How do you find those winning moves?

In our work with top leaders, we have developed an evidence-based approach with four core principles. These offer an actual operating system to take you to optimal performance. You need to rise above your reflexes to make wise and smart choices based on principles from behavioral psychology and decades of business leadership experience.

The four core principles of our MOVE framework are to develop these skills:

M

Mindful alertness

to all 3 dimensions of Leadership

O

Options generator

having 4 approaches to any leadership challenge

V

Validate your vantage point

knowing what helps and what hinders clarity

E

Engage and Effect Change

on an individual, team, and organizational level

M

Mindful Alertness

This is the first principle of MOVE. There are 3 dimensions to mindful alertness: external (what you want or need to accomplish), internal (who you need to be as a leader) and interpersonal (how to best relate to others to unlock their potential and achieve your goals). These are inextricably linked.

O

Options Generator

Given your vision and goals, how do you go about achieving them? We have developed a way to generate options that allows you to have many different ways to address your challenges and lead the way your people need you to.

V

Validate Your Vantage Point

Check your take on reality and choose the best point of view. How do you know what you see is real? What might be clouding your view? Having clarity is a competitive advantage.

E

Engage and Effect Change

The signals you send to your team directly impact their performance and likelihood of success. Since you can’t be everywhere at all times, how do you effect change through your signals as a leader?

Our goal is to help you explore your strengths and potential and develop a sense of where to grow. We developed this quick self-assessment as your first step towards achieving Real-Time Leadership with MOVE. It starts with how well you know yourself as a leader. Your responses below will provide a first insight.

START ASSESSMENT

David Noble & Carol Kauffman

Find your winning moves when the stakes are high.

Let’s get going. Take a moment and think of an important leadership challenge that you are facing currently – whether it is an urgent challenge, something you need to achieve this quarter or longer-term strategies. It can be external, internal (personal development) or interpersonal. With that challenge in mind, answer the following questions to explore where you best need to MOVE.

Mindfully Alert

Dimension One

External challenges you must meet: Many leaders tell themselves that they are clear on what they want or need to achieve. How about you?

Have you clearly articulated or written down your goals for this challenge?

  • No, I have not spent any or much time reflecting on my goals explicitly
  • No, I have not articulated or written down my goals. But I do think about my goals
  • Yes, I am clear about my goals and have logged them
  • Yes, I am clear about my goals and have logged them and regularly update them

Even if I am confident of a decision, I seek input from others to align on what my top goals should be for this challenge.

  • I don’t need input about my goals or decisions
  • I only take input from my closest confidantes
  • I only take input from my direct team
  • I always take input from a wide range of stakeholders

Dimension Two

Internal state and how you lead yourself: Personal development and being highly aware of your inner state is a superpower to success.

I believe my personal development as a leader will impact success on my business challenges.

  • I don’t agree with this statement
  • I somewhat agree with this statement
  • I mostly agree with this statement
  • I strongly agree with this statement

I know my top strengths, development areas and what activates or triggers me.

  • Not entirely clear about these (i.e., my strengths, development areas and triggers)
  • I have some sense of these
  • I have some sense of these and have worked on managing my reactions
  • I am very clear about these and have a plan to hold myself accountable for managing my reactions

Dimension Three

Interpersonal challenges, how you lead. How you relate to your team and those around you can create psychological safety and unleash the best version of them, or not.

When the pressure is on, I am truly able to center myself and listen to understand another’s point of view, even when I don’t think they are correct.

  • I find it difficult to do this when under pressure
  • When under pressure, I do this about 25% of the time
  • When under pressure, I do this up to 50% of the time
  • I always do this, especially under pressure

I can adjust how I relate and respond to others based on their personal style and preferences and I work to cultivate psychological safety and inclusion.

  • I find it difficult to adjust my style when under pressure
  • When under pressure, I adjust my style about 25% of the time
  • When under pressure, I adjust my style up to 50% of the time
  • I am always adjusting my style especially under pressure

Options generation

Willpower gives you the determination to reach your goals, however, it is not enough. The ability to create multiple pathways forward (“Way-Power”) is a true requirement. We help you see four approaches to any challenge.

I have a clear pathway forward.

  • I don’t have a clear pathway
  • I have a clear plan
  • I have a plan and a backup plan
  • I have a plan and multiple contingency plans

There are many styles of leadership including, bias for action, data based, people first. My leadership style under high stakes situations is flexible so I can have multiple pathways forward to win.

  • I don’t really flex; especially difficult when under pressure.
  • I can flex on occasion; even when under pressure.
  • I flex regularly; even when under pressure.
  • I always flex, that is how I operate.

Vantage Point

Validating your vantage point is a requirement. How do you know what you see is real? What might be clouding your view? Clarity is a competitive advantage.

I often question my understanding of my goals, approaches and how best to implement plans.

  • I am confident; I don’t often question myself
  • I consult only with those I trust
  • I invite input including from those who don’t agree with me
  • I am always curious about how others think and open to how my view may be blocked or wrong

I pause to reflect how my understanding of my challenges is impacted by my values, personality or biases.

  • I don’t feel the need to do this
  • I pause to do this sometimes
  • I often pause to reflect
  • I always pause to reflect

Engage and Effect Change

is about the impact you have on people, the organization you lead and the larger environment. The signals you send to your team directly impacts their performance and likelihood of success.

I explicitly articulate my intent as a leader (e.g. not only what to accomplish, but also why it matters and the milestones of how to get there).

  • I don’t need to do this. My intent is very clear to all
  • I sometimes do this; even if not always explicitly
  • I always do; even if not always explicitly
  • I always do this and seek confirmation and provide clarification if needed

If I were to ask my team members to write down what they think is my intent for an important challenge, how confident would I be that they will get it right?

  • Frankly, don’t know
  • I am confident a few will get it right
  • I am confident most will get it right
  • I am confident that all will get it right

Congratulations on completing your Real Time Leadership assessment!

Assess your Real-Time Leadership Agility and Potential

Real Time Leadership offers you a way to assess and address all of these challenges.

We designed “Real-Time-Leading” as an operating system to help you move the needle on what matters most; especially when facing high-stake challenges. It is not a one-time checklist. Rather, it is intended to help you discover a new way of being. Beyond having the willpower to succeed (which you invariably have—otherwise you won’t be reading this), we want you to have the “way power” to achieve and exceed your goals without depleting yourself and your team. RTL will be your new operating system to anchor all your applications.
